Hand-carved of dense poplar wood, and sealed and finished in authentic colors, this fluidly graceful carving of a modern-day beluga whale is a beautiful display piece we couldn't resist posting on PaleoGallery.com. The figure is set in a base of treated and preserved driftwood found on a South Carolina beach by the artist.
Carver and scrimshaw artisan Don Meadows knew this whale personally! While serving on the submarine USS RAY SSN 653 as it patroled under the Arctic ice, Meadows and crew discovered this beluga whale following the vessel, and nicknamed it "Snorkels." Snorkels followed the submarine for a long time and distance, and when the submarine would surface in a hole in the ice, Snorkels would be right there with them.

Modern beluga whales prefer the cold waters of the Arctic and sub-arctic regions while their ancient ancestors, who swam in the Pliocene oceans about 3-4 million years ago, preferred more temperate and tropical waters - a mystery still puzzling whale researchers today.
