This specimen is the internal mold of a large clam that filled with sediment and turned to stone. A bit of the original shell is present.
A steinkern is the fossilized outline of a hollow organic structure, such as as a skull or mollusk shell. It is formed when mud or sediment consolidates within the structure, and the structure itself then disintegrates or dissolves.
